Maricopa County's Justice Courts
Maricopa County holds 26 justice courts -- more than a third of every justice court in Arizona -- covering Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Glendale, Surprise, Avondale and everything between them. It is also the one county in the state where working out which court you need is genuinely difficult.
Twenty-five of the twenty-six courts share a building with at least one other court. Five sit at a single downtown Phoenix address, and there are four apiece in Avondale, Surprise, north Phoenix, Mesa and Chandler. Only Ironwood, out at Gila Bend, has a building to itself. An address therefore tells you almost nothing. The precinct is set by where the property is, so the only reliable way to match one to the other is the county's own lookup: enter the property address on Maricopa County's Find a Precinct page, which opens in a new tab, and read off the justice precinct. Do not assume the nearest courthouse is the right one. One boundary case is worth knowing: if the property is in or near Apache Junction, the court is the Apache Junction Justice Court in Pinal County, because the city crosses the county line even though the court does not.
A landlord and tenant case here is normally heard in the justice court for the precinct the property sits in. Above the justice courts' civil jurisdiction limit it belongs in the superior court instead, and below that limit the two share it. The Superior Court here sits in several downtown Phoenix buildings rather than one. Civil matters are heard at the East Court Building, 101 West Jefferson Street, a few blocks from the Jackson Street justice courts.

Court details were checked in August 2026. Arizona has been consolidating rural justice courts -- Santa Cruz in 2019, and Graham and La Paz in 2023 -- so listings elsewhere can name courts that have closed. If anything here matters to a filing, confirm it with the court before you rely on it.

Which court hears an eviction in Maricopa County?
Normally the justice court for the precinct where the rental property is located, and Maricopa County has 26 justice courts. Justice courts share jurisdiction over these cases with the superior court up to a limit set by statute, and above that limit the superior court hears them. Municipal and city courts do not hear them at all.
